A story today in Investors Business Daily today headlines 45% Of Doctors Would Consider Quitting If Congress Passes Health Care Overhaul.  It shows that the heads of various organizations, like the AMA and AARP, often don’t reflect the interests of their members.  Readers might ask why they wouldn’t volunteer to be government employees.

It reminded me of the transformation of the Canadian health care system, that turned independent business people (doctors) into government employees.  I lived there at the time, and knew a medical doctor who specialized in speech therapy.  She was very focused and had taken years to attain her credentials and reputation.

One day, she announced to us that she was quitting and going back to business school.  Her reason stemmed from the mind numbing indifference of the people she worked with everyday.  They had to work by the government rules.  The spark had been extinguished.  She chose to start again, rather than participate in the indifference that a cost-driven bureaucracy must dictate.

Now The Left will cry “But we have compassion”.  Yes, no doubt, there are people who care at the DMV … but the experience, state by state through the country, is surprisingly uniform and dull, waits are long, and service does not improve.

Image that everyday, every hospital you walk in, is like a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles.  We do not want the government to take over more of the health care system than it already runs.  And we do not want medical professionals to feel that they are government employees.

Thomas Sowell noted recently that Canadians who can afford it come to the USA for the very best care.  Where we will go if our care becomes like Canada?
